The Comfort of Returning to a Story

There’s something wonderfully comforting about returning to a story.

Sometimes it’s a favorite book waiting patiently on the shelf. Sometimes it’s a story we started writing months ago and suddenly feel ready to revisit. And sometimes, it’s simply the familiar feeling of opening a book and knowing that, for a little while, the outside world can wait.

Stories have a beautiful way of welcoming us back.

No matter how much time has passed, there is often something waiting for us between the pages.

This week, I’ve been thinking about the importance of returning to the work we love.

Writing can sometimes feel like a journey filled with starts, pauses, changes, and unexpected turns. Ideas evolve. Characters surprise us. A chapter we once struggled with suddenly becomes clear after we’ve given it a little time.

My writing update this week is a reminder I’m giving myself: every moment spent thinking about a story is part of the creative process.

Not every day has to produce ten pages.

Some days are for writing.

Some days are for dreaming.

Some days are for returning to an idea and seeing it with fresh eyes.

And sometimes, that fresh perspective is exactly what a story needs.

Let’s Talk About Books 📖

Have you ever reread a book and discovered something completely new?

It fascinates me how the same story can feel different depending on where we are in life.

A character we didn’t understand years ago suddenly makes perfect sense. A quiet moment becomes meaningful. A line we barely noticed the first time stays with us long after we finish reading.

The book may be the same.

But we are not.

That’s one of the reasons I love rereading favorite stories. Returning to a book can feel a little like visiting an old friend—and discovering that there is still more to learn about them.

Maybe stories are meant to grow with us.

Maybe that’s why some books stay on our shelves for years.

Maybe that’s why unfinished stories sometimes call us back.

And maybe we don’t always have to rush toward something new when there is still beauty waiting for us in something we already love.

Sometimes, the next chapter begins when we decide to return.
